Final Cut 10.6.5 Share h264 Video + Audio Settings, Result Is Audio Only ?! It's A🪳

Final Cut Pro 10.6.5, Monterey 12.6.1 on Mac M1 continues to give me a hard time. Today I'm exporting (Share) a h264 preset, two projects at once.

The first Project exports correctly. The second one does not, I get a notice: Share has failed.

Resulting in a QT file for the second Project has no video in it, only audio... What is going on???

Upon restarting FCP, the Export / Share goes through no problem.

Epic Games Launcher 14.4.1 On Mac M1, Unreal Engine Tab Is Slow, And Buggy 🐛🪲

Why is Epic Games Laucher soooo sticky and buggy on Mac?

Each time I go browse for an asset, click on the asset to see the details, and if I click the back button, or if I go browse again, this is what I get:

Epic Games Launcher is STUCK, endlessly spinning

Not good Epic Games! The only way to get out of the endless spiral is to click on the Library, or on the Store Tab, and then click on the Unreal Engine tab again to force reload... It's terrible and slows down operations. Please fix this.

It's really annoying that any filtering is lost when you go browse a different category. I'd like to set my filtering to UE 5.1 and MacOs once and keep that selection always, no matter where I go browse.

Also please update the free content so that more is available for UE 5.1. I mean what's the point of touting the last shiny 5.1 version if there is little content for it?

Final Cut Pro 10.6.5 Corrupted Library / Project

FCP has been pissing me off all day today 😡. After having a problem earlier with a Project Snapshot that I could not move, nor delete; FCP refused to Share on export and nothing happened...

I had to create a brand new Library, import my cuts / Projects, and all Media, while omitting the f$%ck@#p 🤬 Snapshot of course. And here goes a couple of hours.

Then I had to restart the computer because FCP still didn't want to export anything 😤.

Finally after restart it's behaving normally again. It's exporting, and the exported files look good. Pffui!.. 🥵

Final Cut Pro 10.6.5 The Operation Couldn't Be Completed. Invalid Argument. Error Message

FCP 10.6.5 is giving me a hard time. I've created a Snapshot of a Project. I want to move the Snapshot from the Event it resides currently, into another Event.

FCP does not comply and gives me this error message:

The Operation Couldn't Be Completed. Invalid Argument.

Workaround: Duplicate the current Snapshot, then the new Snapshot can be moved to the other Event without problem.

Only... I cannot delete the original! FCP is being stubborn and I can't move this Snapshot to the trash. Something is rotten.

I Bought A Dell S2721QS 4K Monitor, My Review

S2721QS

 Dell S2721QS, 4K 60Hz, 2021, 99% sRGB, 8bits+FRC, $249 on Amazon.

OK, this is the first one I bought from my list of 15, because it was the least expensive 27' 4K 8bits+FRC monitor, and I wanted to see what I could get out of a budget Dell display.

It arrived from Amazon quickly. I immediately plugged it and... Noticed something odd.

On the default settings there is a visible color shift across the screen. It's bluish on the left, yellowish on the right. No! 😫

I asked my friends and family to have a look at the screen displaying a full screen white image, and they all saw the defect. So it's fairly obvious, not anodyne in any way.

I fiddled with the menu, nothing really helped. There isn't much in terms of customization anyway except for a User Colors setting, i.e. RGB sliders, Brightness and Contrast adjustments.

Otherwise, the screen is really nice. It's bright - way too bright on the default settings - crisp, compared to my old HD monitor, with a very smooth and stable image. The stand is adjustable, but it's kind of wobbly.

Time for calibration.

100% sRGB, 74% Adobe RGB, 84% DCI-P3, it's decent.

Not too bad. Not too great.

After calibration the color shift is somewhat less visible, but I can still see it! Darn! 😖

Let's measure the uniformity:

Not so great uniformity...

So three negatives points for this Dell S2721QS model:

  • Color shift across the screen
  • Shoddy uniformity
  • Wobbly stand

I don't like the suboptimal uniformity of this Dell, and I'm even more bothered about the color unbalance. There is definitely a yellowish blob tint on the right and a cyan tint on the left. These two problems compound badly to make the screen look cheap/bad.

Dell, Dell, did I get a lemon? Possibly some units are better than others? Maybe. I don't know if I want to try and order another one just to see. Probably not.

I will be using this panel for a little bit, overall though I would not recommend this model, and I think I will ultimately be returning it.

Do you have a S2721QS? Does it look good to your eyes? Do you see a color shift like I do? I'd be interested in knowing what's your experience.

I Need A New Computer Monitor. My List Of 15 Contenders For Creators Like Myself

OK, I am in need of new computer monitors. One of my old ViewSonic monitor had a breakdown. One of the lamps is busted, the bottom of the screen is now dark, and it's not coming back. I need a replacement.

I've been using two identical Viewsonic 24' (1920 x 1080) monitors for a while. I'm OK with the dual monitor setup. I feel that I need 27', or maybe even 32' at this point.

Resolution should be upped from full HD to QHD (2560 x 1440) for 27', or even 4K. Since I'm using Macs, 5K would be great, but the price of 5K monitors is too high.

As a film/video editor and finishing artist, I am picky in terms of uniformity, both for color and luminosity.

Finally I am a frugal guy, and I really don't want to break the bank, so I will keep the price under or near $500. Sounds impossible... We'll see.

I've gathered information on the web, and I've rounded a few suspects:

A) 27' QHD 2560 x 1440 monitors:

Asus PA278QV 2020, 100% sRGB, 100% Rec.709, 95% DCI-P3, DeltaE<2, 8bits, $294 on Amazon

Benq PD2700Q, 2020, 100% sRGB, 100% Rec.709, DeltaE<3, 8bits+FRC, $297 on Amazon

Asus PA278CV, 2020, 100% sRGB, 100% Rec.709, DeltaE<2, 8bits, $319 on Amazon

Dell U2722D, 2020, 100% sRGB, 100% Rec.709, 95% DCI-P3, 8bits+FRC, $349 on Amazon

Dell U2722DE, 2021, 100% sRGB, 100% Rec.709, 95% DCI-P3, DeltaE<2, 8bits+FRC, $405 on Amazon

B) 27' 4K 3840 x 2160 monitors:

Dell S2721QS, 2021, 99% sRGB, 8bits+FRC, $249 on Amazon.

LG 27UP650-W, 2021, 95% DCI-P3, 8bits+FRC, $249 on Amazon

HP U28, 2020, 100% sRGB, 90% DCI-P3, DeltaE<2, 8bits+FRC, $324 on Amazon

LG 27UL850-W, 2019, 99% sRGB, 8bits+FRC, $376 on Amazon

LG 27BP85UN-W, 2021, DCI-P3 95%, 8bits+FRC, $447 on Amazon

Asus PA279CV, 2020, 100% sRGB, 100% Rec.709, 95% DCI-P3, DeltaE<2, 8bits+FRC, $447 on Amazon

Dell U2720QM, 2020, 99% sRGB, 99% Rec.709, 95% DCI-P3, DeltaE<2, 8bits+FRC, $464 on Amazon.

Dell P2723QE, 2022, 99% sRGB, 99% Rec.709, 95% DCI-P3, DeltaE<2, 8bits+FRC, $525 on Amazon

C) 32' 4K Monitors:

LG 32BN67U-B, 2020, 95% DCI-P3, 8bits+FRC, $399 at B&H

LG 32UN880-B, 2020, 95% DCI-P3, 8bits+FRC, $399 on Amazon

I feel a 32' monitor has to have 4K resolution. Unfortunately this limits the number of models available under $500.

So there, that's my list of 15 monitors with decent specs, under/near $500. If you have any other ideas, please share!

I now need to select one and give it a go. I feel like it's gonna be a 27' 4K display for me, I'll keep you posted.

SDI Standards: SD, HD, 3G, 6G, 12G What Are They?

Broadcast equipment, monitors for example, have HDMI, or SDI, or both inputs/outputs.

When they sport SDI (Serial Digital Interface) inputs, they are characterized by a specific standard, set by SMPTE, ex. "SDI 3G".

What does that mean? Well it's a combination of supported transmission bitrates and video formats.

To simplify:

8bit video signal

SD SDI supports legacy NTSC 480i and PAL 576i formats at a speed of 270Mbps max.

HD SDI supports 1080i and 720p at a speed of 1485Mbps max.

10bit video signal

3G SDI supports 1080 60p at 2970Mbps max.

6G SDI supports up to 2160p30 ("4K") at 6000Mbps max.

12G SDI supports 2160p60 at 12000Mbps max.

24G SDI supports 4320p30 ("8K") at 24000Mbps max.

Audio is always embedded, and color subsampling varies, most often is YCbCr 4:2:2 with standardized colorimetry (ex. Rec709.)

Now, practically, a 4K monitor will need a 6G+ SDI input to accept a 4K signal via SDI. Else a "lesser G" SDI input will only receive HD signals, and any 4K signal will have to be connected to the HDMI 2.0+ input.

Example:

This "BM 4KS" line of Lilliput monitors have 3G SDI, so no 4K signal via SDI, only compatible with HDMI input.

This "BM 12G" line, and this "Q 12G" line of Lilliput monitors have 12G SDI, so 4K signals can be routed to either SDI or HDMI inputs.

The main differentiation between SDI and HDMI in post being HDMI has a greater latency, which might or might not be a problem for your application.

More info about HDMI on Wikipedia.

DaVinci Resolve 18.1 Continues To Have A Bug 🪲 In Video Monitor Look Up Table

When applying a LUT to the Video Monitor, it should only affect the output, in my case the SDI out from the UltraStudio Monitor 3G.

Unfortunately it also affects the Scopes in the Edit and Cut Pages even though No LUT Selected is selected in the preferences for the Scopes Look Up Table.

Bizarrely, and thankfully, the Scopes are not affected in the Color Page, at least that's where it's most important.

SMPTE Bars looking correct on the Scopes

When No LUT selected for Video Monitoring

SMPTE Bars displayed incorrectly on the Scopes in the Edit and Cut Pages. Why?
In the Color Page at least the Scopes look correct.
Note the LUT applied to Monitoring only, not to Scopes.

That's a BUG 🪲 that's been plaguing Resolve version after version for long time:

Why has this inconsistent behavior not been fixed by now BMD? 😡

Why Is Google Bloating My Computer With 88GB Of Cache Files For Google Drive?

Google stop using our computers as storage for your own use. I have 88GB of Google cache (crap) loaded on my boot drive. I do not sync my files to Google Drive, I'm Streaming only.

Home/Library/Application Support/Google/DriveFS/bullshitnumber/content_cache

What content? What cache?

There is no reason for this cache to exist and grow so big. It's totally opaque. NO!

iZotope is Trashing Excellent Plug-ins, Just Cause They Can

iZotope is discontinuing a bunch of plug-ins from Exponential Audio, a company iZotope acquired semi recently. Among the casualties are the wonderful Rs and Phoenix reverbs. Instead they are pushing for the bloated Neoverb, Stratus and Symphony plug-ins. Without any upgrade path for existing customers. Shame.

Other discarded apps from iZotope are Iris, Break Tweaker and Trash. I haven't used these as much I have to say. I guess iZotope don't care about these anymore. Do you feel old yet?

Adobe Premiere Does Not Draw Waveforms Properly, Another Bug 🪳

The bugs 🐛 🪲 🪳 are crawling around with Premiere. This time it's in the form of finicky waveforms drawing... Or lack of shall I say...

Isn't this a wonderful behavior?

Good luck keeping your sanity with this kind of waveform drawing! Oh! By the way, as you see here, it will draw eventually after you playback or zoom-in/out, but next time you open the same file, the same empty sections reappear.

I always remember Premiere being shitty with waveform drawing, so it's not like this problem is brand new. Who cares? Just delete these pesky peak (.pek) files once in a while, what are you complaining about?

Who f$c^*ng cares!?? Not Adobe obviously! Good luck editing audio.

The bugs 🐛 🪲 🪳 are everywhere with Premiere!

More Adobe Premiere Pro Bugs - It's Endless

Here is another bug! Premiere is so buggy, stay away from it!

When you try to transcribe, or in my case re-transcribe, a Sequence, I get this error message and nothing gets done:

A low-level exception occurred in RawPCM (Exporter:17)

Great! Worked fine on the assembly timeline though. Oh! Wait, apparently if you use any audio FX, or even, god forbid, if you adjusted any levels in the timeline, Premiere throws this shit in your face and does nothing.

https://community.adobe.com/t5/premiere-pro-discussions/a-low-level-exception-occured-rawpcm-exporter-17/td-p/12944658

Lovely! Users only reported this bug 6 month ago, we only had two or three versions of Premiere since then. The bug is still there.

Wonderful, thank you Adobe!

--- UPDATE ---

You won't believe this! So I had enough with premiere and I went for a walk to lower my blood pressure. Lo and behold I come back to the same Sequence, same Project, everything the same as I left it an hour ago. I didn't touch anything. For the life of me I click on Re-transcribe sequence and... It goes through and is currently transcribing!!!

Meaning the workarounds and/or whatever reasons peeps believe Premiere is giving this error message are all BS. My Sequence is completely mixed, with clips, and tracks levels, and sound effects galore! And this time it has decided that it would go through with transcription.

What the F*U#% IS THIS ADOBE???

It's maddening I tell you. Adobe Premiere, the most unreliable NLE software champ 🏆 ever.

Adobe Premiere + Media Encoder Ultimate Crap On Mac M1

I've been fighting Premiere and Media Encoder for a while now. I can tell you that they are not ready for serious work that involve h264 as of v. 22.6.2 and v. 22.6.1 respectfully.

Do not use Premiere or Media Encoder for anything serious with h264 in your workflow and a deadline, it's totally unreliable. The software will give you random problems at any time during post. h264 footage? Forget it! h264 exports? Hell no!

You've been warned.

Here is the first seconds of yesterday's export (h264 VBR 2):

Jagged edges, total fuck up of the animated title. Thanks Adobe!

Here are the first second of today's export (h264):

More jagged edges, extra flickering for fun.
Another royal clusterfuck courtesy of Adobe.

Mind you these are 20+ minutes exports, and only the first second is fucked up. Consistently. With various degrees of fuckery. No way to know what it looks like until it's finished encoding.

This is what it supposed to look like:

Of course when I only select the first second of program, the export is fine.

So now I have to output a ProRes422 version that I will use to encode to h264 with Compressor. One more hour of work, plus 100GB of wasted space.

F.U.C.K Y.O.U. Adobe.

Premiere Is Such A Buggy Piece Of Software

I'm loosing hours everyday because of Premiere's instability and multiple bugs.

It feels like an old software (it is), and it feels like it's trying to catch up, but not really. Premiere was buggy from day one, and it still is.

Avid got (part) of their act together, and cleaned up some code. Not entirely, but enough to get you by.

Adobe on the other hand seem to be building more code on top of buggy code. Throwing new features constantly, but never fixing what needs to be fixed. As new features get implemented, new bugs appear, on top of old ones.

The traps are endless. It's hair pulling, and it's killing your business if you are an independent editor. Do not use Premiere if you have hard stop deadlines, you will be burned.

Today just opening the full screen playback got me a crash. I force quit stupid Premiere and the full screen is still active, frozen, and does not want to go away.

Restarting Premiere, no go. Nothing happens. It froze the entire computer, now I have to restart.

F#$K YOU PREMIERE!

Adobe Please Add This Feature Request To Premiere That 400+ Users Are Asking For

Reorder / Rearrange Video and Audio Tracks

It would be amazing to simply grab a track and move it up or down in the order of the sequence. This was something I could do easily back when I used Vegas Pro. Occasionally, I have big, complex sequences and would like to reorder the tracks for organization purposes or for shipping off to audio master. Thanks!

https://adobe-video.uservoice.com/forums/911233-premiere-pro/suggestions/33891022-reorder-rearrange-video-and-audio-tracks?page=1&per_page=20

Seriously, yes!

Adobe, users have been asking for this feature for 4 years now. Please add it to Premiere ASAP, it is mind boggling that it it still does not exist in Premiere. It should be a priority.

Every other NLE / DAW does it. Even your own Audition does it! Why not Premiere?

On top of it, as of version 22.6.2 on Mac M1: Premiere screws up h264 footagePremiere has a Warp Stabilizer bug. Premiere has a bug displaying Multicam audio waveforms. AME has a Create New Ingest Preset bug.

What are you guys doing, Adobe?

Adobe Premiere And Media Encoder Are Totally UNRELIABLE On Apple M1 Silicon macOS Monterey

Premiere 22.6.2 and Media Encoder 22.6.1 have been pissing me off for the past few weeks. I had to take over this project that was started in Premiere, and I have experienced problems after problems with Sony MP4 and GoPro footage.

Image tearing up randomly, no matter what I try, it happens one way or the other. Premiere or Media Encoder, Silicon or Intel version, GPU, no GPU, Hardware accel, not accel, whatever I try, nothing works and I end up with tears and macro blocking on export.

I finally got fed up and transcoded everything to Apple ProRes. It's just 10 x the media size, whatever.

Guess what. Freaking AME teared random images in the middle of random clips! I kid you not, this is not even edited, this is a raw MP4 clip from a Sony camera, transcoded to ProRes with AME.

And this is happening, at random:

What on earth is going on Adobe? Look at this macro blocking! Two minutes into a 10 minutes clip. This total crap goes on for a full 30 frames!!! An entire second of media screwed by Adobe.

This is a second attempt at the same transcode. Perfect. Wait, what???

Conclusion: Adobe is not ready for Silicon M1 Macs. Do not use Premiere or AME for reliable operation if you are on a Silicon Mac with Monterey.

Adobe, FIX THIS NOW!  And don't tell me it's Apple's fault. FCP and Resolve work reliably with MP4 footage. There is zero reason why this is happening but your laziness. At this point you should give me money to use your a$$ software, not the other way around.

Everything Is A Subscription 👹 Now, Including My Services As An Editor. I'm Looking At You Sony.

Everything is a subscription 👹  now, not only do we pay a hefty price for cameras, Sony's in particular, but now Sony wants more money from us 🥀🌸CREATORS🌷 to use all the camera's features in post. And of course it is a subscription 👹, what else!

I present to you 🙌Catalyst Prepare Plug-in🙌, a free crippled plug-in for (crippled) Sony cameras - I kid you not. Or if you fork additional extortion money, a (semi) full (semi) featured (kind of) plug-in on a subscription 👹 plan for $99/year (at the moment, I'll bet you it will increase way faster than inflation):

The price for the rip-off annual plan is determined by the rabbit in the hat, and by the way, we can cripple the software any time you won't see your money back. So long suck3r! Err, we meant to say: 🦌Dear 🥀🌸CREATOR🌷!

Brought to you by Sony 💪uber functional😵 🙌Imagine Edge Software Division🙌 . I would not touch this 💩 with a yard long stick. But we Sony offer you this gift, oh revered 🥀🌸CREATOR🌷.

The Free features of this 🙌amazing🙌 plug-in are as follow:

1) Color Adjustment (Exposure Index, LUT, ISO.)

2) Importing Shots Marks

3) Importing OK/NG/KEEP Flags.

The give me rent money or go 👆 yourself SUBSCRIPTION 👹 ONLY features are:

1) Image stabilization and Lens Breathing Compensation. (Not supported by any cameras at the moment.)

You see there is a WATERMARK HERE if you wish not to pay for the subscription 👹. Really, really we do care.

Whoa! I'm floored! Wonderful! Delicious! Oh! So pretty Sony!

Hmmmm. Hard sell Sony. Nixing in-camera IS and in-camera BC for what? More work later in post?

OK basically Sony wants 🥀🌸CREATORS'🌷 money for features every single NLE already have, and for the privilege of using a newer (crippled) Sony camera and for doing in post what other cams do in the box.

Yo! IS and BC are available in post man!

Not a feature Sony. Bad premises Sony. Going backward Sony.

Only available for Premiere Pro, how about FCP? Avid MC? Resolve? Everything else? Uh?, as of now it's: 👆 yourself losers, it's Premiere or nothing. We Sony tell you 🦌Dear 🥀🌸CREATORS🌷 what to use, not the other way around.

Not looking forward to the future according to Sony.

Hey Mr Sony, how about interchangeability in post? I guess whomever bleeds for the subscription first (hey dude I bought this cool cam, look, shit I need to pay more dough to actually use all these cool features... OK I'm a suck3r already, here is more $ Sony), will have to convert all the footage with baked-in IS and lens BC. Actually it doesn't even deliver the BC part, that's for later, but we'll take your money now anyway, cause you know, F.👆.C.K Y.👆.U. 🦌🦌🦌Dear, Dear 🥀🌸CREATOR🌷.

All The Best, Have fun with our cameras!

Now we want to take over post.
