Apple's macOS Mojave 10.14 is Upon Us! How to make a bootable USB installer

Apple just released macOS 10.14 Mojave!

As Always: BACKUP EVERYTHING and DO NOT UPGRADE YOUR SYSTEM OR APPS IN THE MIDDLE OF A PROJECT.

Mojave is brand new, and even though it is stable a lot of plug-ins, apps and add-ons shenanigans are not yet 100% compatible. So BEWARE and TEST your stuff before diving-in. I have a Mule machine that I load with new installs for my own tests, and I'm very thorough and prudent. I won't upgrade my main system before some time.

Apple conveniently explains how to make a bootable USB flash drive installer with Mojave  in this support page, using the 'createinstallmedia' command in Terminal.

But first, download Mojave from the Apple Store, and Quit the installation when the installer opens.

Mojave install file is 5.7GB according to Apple.

Check that your computer and graphic card are on the list

For MacPro owners like myself, the upgraded graphic card must be Metal capable:

macOS Mojave requires a graphics card that supports Metal, an Apple technology that lets the system and apps efficiently tap into the capabilities of today’s graphics processors (GPUs). The graphics cards offered by Apple in Mac Pro (Mid 2010) and Mac Pro (Mid 2012) don't have GPUs that support Metal, so these systems require upgraded graphics cards in order to install macOS Mojave.

And for some reason you must be on High Sierra before the upgrade:

Before you upgrade to macOS Mojave on these Mac Pro models, you need to update to macOS High Sierra 10.13.6 and then make sure that your graphics card is compatible. You also need to turn off FileVault. First, use the Mac App Store to update your operating system to macOS High Sierra 10.13.6. Don't upgrade your Mac Pro (Mid 2010) or Mac Pro (Mid 2012) to macOS Mojave directly from macOS versions prior to 10.13.6.

I will soon install Mojave on my second MacPro machine and will report any hiccups with my usual apps in future posts. Let me know how it performs on your system in the comments below. Cheers!

Sapphire Radeon 7950 Mac Edition on MaPro 5,1 macOs Sierra

I moved my Sapphire Radeon to my MacPro 5,1 over a year ago and everything has been fine. I have no glitch and things are smooth. I wish I could upgrade to a Sapphire RX580 8GB and get more power with FCPX, Premiere, Resolve, Motion and After Effects - my staple apps.

Apple has announced some support for external GPUs in masOc High Sierra, and the Radeon 580X is one of the few card that seem to be supported. Although as a single GPU in a MacPro we probably wouldn't see the splash screen at startup. The card is hard to come by though. I am still on Sierra, and I might wait until the end of the year to upgrade os + GPU. We'll see.

The card has seen a lot of usage, and has been working flawlessly, so I'm not complaining. I read on the internet that the 7950 glitches happened in a single monitor configuration. Might be why I have been immune on my station since I am using two monitors. My previous post about this problem was back in 2014 in a MacPro 3,1: https://humanuser.blogspot.com/2014/02/radeon-7950-mac-edition-on-macpro-31.html

FCPX 10.1.1 on Mac Pro 3,1 2008

FCPX 10.1.1 runs relatively smooth and fast, on Mac Pro 3,1.
OSX Mavericks, 16GB RAM, Sapphire Radeon 7950 Mac edition, BMD Mini Monitor PCIe.

It crashes occasionally, once every other day or so... But I have not lost a single move so far. i.e. after reloading, I'm right where I was before the crash.  Except for the Timeline randomly loading / closing projects.
It lags at times when I have the Inspector and the effects Browser open at once. It is smooth when they are closed.

Radeon 7950 Mac edition on MacPro 3,1 early 2008 OS X Mavericks

Reporting Radeon 7950 Mac edition in MacPro 3,1 working fine.
---
Plain Mavericks, no drivers installed (Sapphire or others.)
No glitch, no flicker, no lag, no hang to report after over 40hrs.  400hrs. of use.
--- Update (May)
I do get the occasional "flicker" reported by other users, on single monitor config, odd.
It's more like a "zap" though. It really happens rarely, but I noticed it up to three times on a single day while working in FCPX.
It's very short, less than a second and I didn't notice it before with two monitors attached.
---
Graphic card working well with FCPX, Motion, and Adobe CC suite (Premiere, AE, PS, AME.)

Radeon 7950 3GB Mac edition
MacPro 3,1 early 2008
Quad Core Intel Xeon 2.8GHz
16GB Ram
OS X Mavericks 10.9.2 (upgraded from 10.9.1 clean install.)
