Photoshop Darkens The Image When Zooming Between 31% and 15%

For some reason Photoshop is darkening the entire image when zooming between 31% and 15%. I searched online for a reason, a solution, to no avail. It only points to some "synchronized brushes" or other esoteric settings.

In fact in my case what causes this behavior is a masked (inverted) Exposure Adjustment Layer that I need to darken a small section of the image.

If I turn the Adjustment Layer off, the darkening of the entire image does not occur when zooming between these two values.
